When it comes to bringing more people in, don't be
00:03
afraid to ask people to post or ask people for

help. I think it's a good idea to add your

friends to your group when you start just to kind

of get it rolling. Find other groups that are

a similar size or even bigger that you can say: "Hey,

we'll shout you out if you shout us out!"

When people say "Another group told me about you."

When people say "I heard about you,"

it's like wow! We must be doing something right.
There are several ways to get the word out about your group and help increase membership. We spoke with experienced group admins Jonathan, Lauren and Geriann to understand how they enlisted other people to help grow their groups.

If new members like what they see, they will actively go out and say "Hey, you guys need to come join this group. It's the best thing ever!"

Key Tips
  • Ask members, friends and admins of other groups to help get the word out about your group.
  • If people care about your community and enjoy the group, they may want to invite their friends.
  • Remind members to invite their friends, since they may not know they can.

Participate in related groups in a helpful, positive and respectful manner. Members of those groups may want to join your community.

It may seem challenging to find new members for your group at first. Many successful groups started out small and gradually increased their membership.

If you are starting a group about a topic you are passionate about, you might already know some people who share that passion. Get them involved early and encourage them to actively participate and invite others to the group.

Many experienced admins told us that members who really like your group will often invite other interested people to join. If those new members also invite people, your group can grow pretty fast. All the admins we have spoken to told us that word-of-mouth is a great way to grow your group.

To enable word-of-mouth growth, you'll need to encourage the creation of great posts and foster a sense of community. The type of content created and value people receive from the group will vary depending on the type of group you run.

Public, content-driven groups can grow by encouraging members to post great content in the group. Members will share popular group posts to News Feed to share with their friends. Those friends can request to join the group to see more content.

Smaller, closed groups may not have posts shared with others outside the group. The value of this kind of group is in its supportive community.

Creating a welcoming, positive community empowers members to want to get the word out about their experience, whether it be to let people know about the group's great content, its supportive community, or both.

Your group members are your most effective partners in promoting your group to others.
